Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Australia has welcomed the Federal Budget announcement of new spending on tobacco control campaigns – but warns that youth campaigns need to be part of a broader, comprehensive strategy to be effective.

Treasurer Costello announced last night (May 10) that the government would spend $25m over the next four years on campaigns targeting young people and their parents.*

Says Anne Jones, ASH Chief Executive:

“This initiative is welcome - and along with $4.3m over four years to reduce smoking while pregnant*, it will go some way towards meeting the aims set out in the government’s National Tobacco Strategy 2004-2009.

“Australia has a good record in reducing smoking rates and more gains can be achieved if campaigns are based on evaluations and expert advice – without interference from the tobacco industry who have targeted young people for decades to become the new smokers.

“We need well funded, sustained campaigns to counter tobacco’s ongoing targeting of young people through widespread tobacco displays in shops, on the internet, in films, and other below-the-line marketing tactics at youth events.”

Research has shown that the most effective way to reduce youth smoking is to:

  • reduce the smoking rates of parents;
  • maintain high tobacco prices;
  • ensure places of work and recreation are smokefree; and
  • provide high quality quit smoking services for smokers.

Health groups are urging the government to use expert advice and evidence-based programs as part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce smoking rates of both young people and parents.
