Action
on Smoking and Health (ASH) Australia has welcomed the Federal Budget
announcement of new spending on tobacco control campaigns – but
warns that youth campaigns need to be part of a broader, comprehensive
strategy to be effective. Treasurer
Costello announced last night (May 10) that the government would spend
$25m over the next four years on campaigns targeting young people and
their parents.* Says
Anne Jones, ASH Chief Executive: “This
initiative is welcome - and along with $4.3m over four years to reduce
smoking while pregnant*, it will go some way towards meeting the aims
set out in the government’s National Tobacco Strategy 2004-2009. “Australia
has a good record in reducing smoking rates and more gains can be
achieved if campaigns are based on evaluations and expert advice –
without interference from the tobacco industry who have targeted young
people for decades to become the new smokers. “We
need well funded, sustained campaigns to counter tobacco’s ongoing
targeting of young people through widespread tobacco displays in
shops, on the internet, in films, and other below-the-line marketing
tactics at youth events.” Research

evidence-based programs as part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce
