Australian
health, child welfare, parent, school, church and community
organisations have called for strong measures to end tobacco promotion
to children, on the eve of World
No Tobacco Day (May 31). 40
organisations endorsing a national campaign to protect children from

The WHO has made
the theme of World No Tobacco Day 2008 on May 31 "The tobacco
industry catches you young." Says Anne Jones,
Chief Executive of Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Australia: “The
tobacco industry has long targeted children as ‘new smokers’ to be
recruited. Nine out of ten new smokers are children. “We
need to counter this in ways shown by research evidence to be
effective. Strong independent research* in Australia and overseas
shows retail display normalises tobacco to children and predisposes
them towards smoking. “Tobacco
display in shops is a powerful form of advertising that targets
children and undermines quit attempts. “These harmful and addictive products can and should be put out of sight, and should not be sold by or to children. “Effective licensing of tobacco sellers in all jurisdictions would help to ensure this.”
