The
ABS figures show that there has been a 10% increase in employment in
Tasmanian pubs and clubs in the May quarter 2006, compared to the May
quarter in the previous year. In
May 2005 there were 2,900 workers in Tasmanian pubs and clubs; this
had increased to 3,200 by the end of May 2006. “The
Commissioner for Licensing has also confirmed no evidence of pub
licenses being handed in nor significant bankruptcies in the hotel
industry since the introduction of the smoking bans,” said the
convenor of the SmokeFree Tasmania Coalition, Ms Kathy Barnsley. “Government
action to reduce tobacco diseases continues to be undermined by the
AHA at a time when lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer of woman
in Tasmania as a result of very high smoking rates - 21% compared to
the national average of 16.3%. Our
concern is that the AHA continues to oppose safe, smokefree workplaces
in all states and this latest scaremongering tactic is being used in
NSW and Victoria to delay smokefree policies until July 2007 and
beyond,” said Anne Jones. Whilst
staff and patrons in Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia are
benefiting from healthier, smokefree workplaces, those in NSW and
Victoria have another 12 months of exposure to second hand smoke. “It's
long overdue for governments to reject false claims and support expert
health advice to improve public health - without further exemptions,
concessions or delays”, said ASH. Comment: Media inquiries:
