Healing Time     Stages 2 and 3

drug education resource for Aboriginal students
from the Department of Education and Training (DET) NSW

Healing Time, Stages 2 and 3 has been developed to address the drug education needs of all students, particularly Aboriginal students, in primary school. The resource specifically addresses tobacco issues within an Aboriginal cultural framework and aims to:

  • engage all students, staff and the school community

  • provide students with knowledge and understanding of the effects of smoking and skills to advocate against smoking within an Aboriginal cultural framework.

The activities in Healing Time support learning outcomes identified in the NSW Personal Development, Health and Physical Education and English K-6 syllabuses. Healing Time has been developed in partnership with the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG).

The Healing Time, Stages 2/3 kit includes the following components:

  • a staff, parent and community manual

  • a Stage 2 teacher’s manual

  • a Stage 3 teacher’s manual

  • seven copies of Araluen’s story

  • seven copies of David’s story

The Staff, parent and community manual

This manual supports school communities in addressing the Aboriginal Education Policy. The activities provide opportunities to engage staff, parents and the community in drug education and familiarise them with the content of Healing Time. The manual includes activities about traditional Aboriginal drug use, Reconciliation, Aboriginal health issues and Dreaming stories.

Stage 2 and Stage 3 teacher’s manuals

Each teacher’s manual includes six lessons and a Dreaming story. Araluen’s story (Stage 2) and David’s story (Stage 3) are used to explore the effects of smoking, decision-making, rules and consequences through the eyes of Aboriginal children and their families.

The stories are set in Nangarra Street, which is a fictional setting typical of many urban centres in NSW. The issues encountered by the main characters, David, Araluen, Alinta and Gwirra provide all students, but Aboriginal students in particular, with opportunities to develop an increased awareness and understanding of smoking-related issues. Students are encouraged to construct a mural of Nangarra Street and use it to record information relating to the lessons and Aboriginal culture.

Stage 2 has a particular focus on passive smoking and the Smoke-free Environment Act 2000. Stage 3 focuses on the effects of smoking, reasons for not smoking and advocacy skills.

Healing Time, Stages 2 and 3 has been distributed to all NSW government primary schools.
