Tobacco control organisations in Australia

Asthma NSW 
A registered charity committed to helping people with asthma. It informs and educates the community, liaises with government and other bodies on asthma related issues including tobacco smoking.   

Asthma Queensland
A registered charity that assists people to manage their asthma more effectively. Goal is to help to alleviate suffering and death caused by the disease. Activities include providing support for tobacco control activities.

Asthma South Australia
A registered charity dedicated to improving the lives of those suffering from asthma. Provides support for tobacco control as an objective consistent with this.

Asthma Victoria
An organisation that undertakes asthma education, advice, research and support. Supports tobacco control as a measure to decrease the triggers of asthma in the environment.

Asthma Western Australia
A community based, non-profit organisation dedicated to the alleviation of problems caused by asthma in the community. Offers support services for people with asthma and their carers and funds local medical and scientific research into asthma.

Australian Consumers Association
A not-for-profit organisation that publishes consumer information to keep consumers informed of products and their properties.

Australian Council on Smoking and Health (ACOSH)
A coalition of 34 medical, educational and community organisations concerned with reducing the health consequences of smoking at a statewide, national and international level.

Australian Dental Association

Australian Department of Health and Aged Care
The Department coordinates national campaigns on alcohol and illicit drugs. As such, it is concerned with policy measures in pursuit of tobacco control.

Australasian Faculty of Occupational Medicine
The College is at the forefront of medical research and health education and is involved in wide health and social issues including tobacco control.

Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine
The Faculty aims to improve and protect the health of populations through the practice of public health medicine, including education and research. Its goals are consistent with those of the tobacco control community.

An organisation representing the health-related interests of adolescents and children in Australia.

A partnership between government and non-government parties in the field of alcohol and other drug services and policy. provides independent, strategic advice to government on these issues.

Cancer Council Australia
A non-government organisation dedicated to increasing scientific understanding and public knowledge of cancer. Services include those aimed at reducing tobacco smoking. Via this site you can also find the Cancer Councils ACT, NSW (for direct link see below), NT, SA, Tas and Vic; and the affiliated Queensland Cancer Fund and WA Cancer Foundation.

Great new youth-friendly site from The Cancer Council NSW. Lots of info, links, activities.

The National Tobacco Campaign (AUS)
A user friendly, interactive site which combats smoking through advertisements with graphic images of damage caused by smoking. Includes advice on how to quit in eight different languages.

ASH (USA)
ASH in the USA has been around for 31 years and is a very active national legal action group.

Cyberisle
Tips on stopping smoking and information designed for young people including a five step plan process for changing health behaviour.

Tobacco BBS-News and Resources on Tobacco
The biggest anti-tobacco site in the world with plenty of links.

Tobacco Control Resource Centre
Legal and policy orientated site with insights into the US litigation and settlements. Also home of the tobacco Products Liability Project.

Tobacco in Australia: Facts and Issues (AUS)
A 400-page encyclopedia of info about tobacco in Australia - but only up to the late 90s so much is outdated now.

Tobacco Free Kids (USA)
A mix of policy and legal analysis containing resources for children.

Victorian Smoking and Health Program - Quit (AUS)
Contains a wide range of useful information and activities as well as contact list, press releases and an update on Quit News.

University of Sydney Department of Public Health and Community Medicine (AUS)
Tobacco Control Super Site provides links for public health researchers and advocates with a focus on the Australian industry documents and tactics.

One of the best US quitting sites on the net, includes testimonies of smokers trying to give up as well extensive links to other quitting sites.


International tobacco control organisations

World Health Organisation
Authoritative international data, information and policy proposals. WHO's Global Status Reports provide country profiles including a vast collection of data on smoking around the world.

GlobaLink
The International Tobacco Control Community, managed by the International Union Against Cancer. Provides information and communication for all those active in smoking prevention. To access this site you need to be a member and have a password.

Framework Convention Alliance
Over 200 organisations from more than 80 countries are involved in this alliance, which aims to make the worldwide tobacco treaty (FCTC) effective. This is their redesigned and much improved website.
