Date Event Details
September 1 - 7 National Asthma Week Smoking is a huge factor in the onset and severity of asthma attacks. Asthmatics deserve more support and better protection in public places - see www.ashaust.org.au/SF'03/releases/041202.htm.  And campaign for better-funded campaigns to reduce parental smoking - see www.ashaust.org.au/mediareleases/mr_20040507.htm.  More on the week at  www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcevent.nsf/pages/A33FAD0C3E25D05D4A257281007DFAB6?opendocument and on asthma in Australia at www.nationalasthma.org.au.
September 2 Fathers' Day Publicise number of fathers who have died due to smoking and the suffering for families. See ASH Smokers' Memorials at www.ashaust.org.au/lv3/Lv3services_memorial.htm
September
2 - 8
National Child Protection Week Fight the myth of smoking as an "adult choice." 90% of new smokers are children. We need out-of-sight sales and retailer registration to help stem  childhood recruitment and addiction - see www.ashaust.org.au/lv3/action_POS.htm.  Also smokefree cars carrying children - all states should follow SA and Tas. More about the week at www.napcan.org.au/NCPW/index.htm. Note that NAPCAN, which runs the week, endorses our aims - see www.napcan.org.au/news.htm
September 4 - 7 Oceania Tobacco Control Conference Major biennial regional conference, this year in Auckland NZ. Latest research, developments, news. ASH Australia will be represented. See www.smokefreeoceania.org.nz

September 8

International Literacy Day

Emphasise tobacco targeting of the less literate. Highlight need for quicker introduction and regular updating of graphic picture-based warnings on packets to help our most vulnerable - including children. See www.ashaust.org.au/mediareleases/mr_20040625.htm.  More on the day at portal.unesco.org/education/en/ev.php-URL_ID=27388&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=-279.html

September
14 - 16 (TBC)
National Party Annual Conference In Canberra - more info at  www.nationals.org.au. Date subject to Federal Election date (yet to be set). Urge the party to improve funding for quit campaigns in regional/rural areas - and to stop accepting tobacco company donations. See our Politicians' Guide at www.ashaust.org.au/lv4/PolliesGuide.htm

September
14 - 16

Clean Up the World Weekend

Don’t be a tosser. Cigarette butts are a huge (clogged) drain. Demand the tobacco companies take responsibility. More on the weekend at www.cleanuptheworld.org/en/Activities/clean-up-the-world-weekend-2007.html. See how a tobacco company is undermining effective action at www.ashaust.org.au/lv4/ButtLitterTrust0605sc.htm.

September
18 - 24

National Stroke Week

Cigarette smoking is a major cause of strokes. More at www.strokefoundation.com.au/ and more on strokes and smoking at www.ashaust.org.au/mediareleases/mr_20020124.htm.

September 21 World Alzheimer's Day Increase awareness that smoking speeds dementia and particularly Alzheimer's - see www.alzheimers.org.au. More on the worldwide day at www.alz.co.uk/adi/wad/wad2006.html.
September 24 World Heart Day Smoking causes 1 in 4 cases of heart disease. Heart disease rate could be slashed if we reduced smoking rates - and secondhand smoke exposure in public places. This year's theme: "Healthy families, healthy communities". More on the day at www.worldheartday.com/home/; statistics and info at www.heartfoundation.com.au. Latest on passive smoke heart damage: www.ashaust.org.au/SF'03/health.htm. See also April 29 - May 5 (National Heart Week).
