April 29 - May 5

National Heart Week

Smoking causes 1 in 4 cases of heart disease. Heart disease rate could be slashed if we reduced smoking rates. See statistics at www.heartfoundation.com.au and more on the week at www.heartfoundation.com.au/heartweek/   Latest on passive smoke heart damage: see http://www.ashaust.org.au/SF'03/releases/050525.htm. See also Sept 24, World Heart Day.

May 1 International Workers' Day (Mayday) Call Mayday for barworkers, entertainers and others still working in unsafe smoky working areas in pubs and clubs. See SmokeFree Australia campaign at www.ashaust.org.au/SF'03/index.htm

May 2

World Asthma Day

Active and passive smoking increases the risk of asthma attacks - see latest passive studies at www.ashaust.org.au/mediareleases/mr_20031219.htm. More about the day at www.ginasthma.com/WADIndex.asp.

May 8 Federal Budget Chance to push for increased funding of anti-smoking campaigns and programs. The fight against tobacco is badly under-funded, although it costs society >$21b a year - see www.health.gov.au/pubhlth/publicat/document/mono49.pdf. And with ageing population, blowout threatens unless we do more - see www.ashaust.org.au/mediareleases/mr_20040905.htm.  A small increase could have a big impact. See health groups' "Blue Chip" submission to Treasury at www.vctc.org.au/
May 12 International Nurses' Day Highlight burden of smoking on health system and need to identify, assess and improve treatment for all smokers. See research on hospital impact at  www.mja.com.au/public/issues/184_01_020106/letters_020106_fm-2.html. More on the day at www.icn.ch/indkit.htm.

May 13

Mothers’ Day

How many families each year lose a mother due to smoking? Family suffering caused by smoking is rarely discussed. See also below, May 15: International Day of Families. See latest on harm to babies from mum smoking at www.theage.com.au/articles/2006/11/28/1164476185777.html

May 13 - 19

Schizophrenia Awareness Week

On average, smoking is 3 times more prevalent among people with schizophrenia than the general population. This can be improved with more programs and support. See www.ashaust.org.au/mediareleases/mr_20020524.htm
More info on schizophrenia at www.sfnsw.org.au.

May 15 International Day of Families Highlight family devastation caused by smoking and secondhand smoke harm. See our Smokers Stories at www.ashaust.org.au/lv4/Lv4services_stories.htm. More about the day at www.un.org/esa/socdev/family/IntObs/IDF/IDFframe.htm. See also Mothers' Day (May 13 above), Fathers' Day etc.
May 28 International Day of Action for Women's Health Chance to highlight impact of smoking on women - the tobacco industry's big Third World target group. Read what the WHO says about women and tobacco worldwide at  www.who.int/inf-pr-2001/en/pr2001-27.html   See some of the latest research studies at www.ashaust.org.au/lv3/Lv3resources_health_reports.htm

May 31

World No Tobacco Day

A worldwide campaign under the WHO to highlight the detrimental effects of tobacco on health. This year's theme is "Smoke Free Environments." In Australia we need stronger action for smokefree pubs, clubs, other crowded public places, homes and cars.  Check available resources and activity exchange at the WHO website, www.who.int/tobacco/communications/events/wntd/2007/en/index.html.  For smokefree workplace campaign in Australia, see www.ashaust.org.au/SF'03
