Date Event Details

April 1

April Fool's Day

Good time to remind smokers and governments not to be fooled by tobacco industry arguments, or claims of having become "responsible."  More at www.ashaust.org.au/lv3/Lv3resources_tobacco_industry.htm

April 2 - 8 Arthritis Awareness Week See how smoking ramps up Rheumatoid Arthritis risk at www.ashaust.org.au/mediareleases/mr_20041027.htm. More about Arthritis and the week at http://arthritisaustralia.com.au/events/eventid/877.

April 7

World Health Day

The 2007 theme is "Health and security: outbreaks and crises". More at www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/83/health_and_security_call_for_papers/en/index.html
The tobacco pandemic is a major crisis, threatening to kill one billion people this century. Urge Australian MPs to take stronger action here and in our region.

April 15 Titanic anniversary On this day the great cruise liner went down, with the loss of 1,513 people - about the same number who die in Australia from smoking each month. Makes you think.

April 14 - 22

National Youth Week

Around 40,000 Australian children start smoking each year - many will never become older Australians, courtesy of continuing targeting of youth by tobacco marketing. More at www.ashaust.org.au - see under Students, Responsible Sale, Tobacco Industry and more. For more on the week: www.youthweek.com Put tobacco on the agenda - suggest it on their online poll page. See also National Youth Tobacco Free Day, March 28.

April 27 - 29 ALP National Conference In Sydney - see www.alp.org.au.  Urge the party to improve smokefree laws to protect employee and public health, protect children with tighter promotion laws, and commit adequate funding to quit campaigns. See our Politicians' Guide at www.ashaust.org.au/lv4/PolliesGuide.htm.
April 28 Workers' Memorial Day Annual day commemorating work deaths, organised worldwide by the ICFTU/TUAC/global union federations. A chance to push for immediate and total separation of smoking from working areas - only Qld and Tas have done it. See latest at www.ashaust.org.au/SF'03 . For more about the day, see www.icftu.org/displaydocument.asp?Index=991219085&Language=EN

April 29 - May 5

National Heart Week

Smoking causes 1 in 4 cases of heart disease. Heart disease rate could be slashed if we reduced smoking rates. See statistics at www.heartfoundation.com.au and more on the week at www.heartfoundation.com.au/index.cfm?page=243. Latest on passive smoke heart damage: see www.ashaust.org.au/mediareleases/mr_20040701.htm. See also Sept 25, World Heart Day.
